And one final development.

Gourds!

And now to one of the greatest emails I have received in awhile

My friend Tom and I decided to see if we could grow something at work too-our floor of the building we work in has giant glass windows that create quite the greenhouse effect when the sun is out.  We are trying peppers.

Here's the email...and then the first pic of our work experiment. PS The nap room refers to the interview room at work that I used to take cat naps in when I was pregnant.  :)

Subject: Good morning my sprouty little friends
Text: It appears that we have teased life from an envelope of inert pods and a container of loam.  Hail the magic power of the nap room.

I have crocus in my front yard

Here is the first time I saw them:

Here is what they looked like a couple days ago:
Spring has sprung here in Western Mass.

I have been a bad garden blogger-probably a few different posts today

The herb seeds failed.   Not even a peep.  So Avery and I replanted them last weekend
I have put them back in the very same spot that was successful for all my little sproutlings...still not going so well.  May have to direct sow.

Field Trip!

This is my enclosed front porch where my fine little seedlings went on vacation over the weekend and yesterday.
These are the blueberry bushes we have purchased so far...doing them in containers.
And here is a preview of a couple more things we are going to plant...

Its staying warm for the next couple of days and then its supposed to get more March like toward the weekend.  Bleah.

March 6, 2010

58 degrees in Springfield.  That is gardening weather!  First, a couple of updates.  Cat Grass....check! (Introducing Thomas the cat)
So far, we haven't found any of it puked back up.  Bonus.

Second, seedlings...check!

In bright sunshine, no less.  Gourds are still being shy, but I just checked them again and I see one starting to poke through.  We have a table out on the front enclosed porch, and they will all go on a field trip out there tomorrow for some more warmth and sun.

Third...before and after pics of what we did in the yard today.  Not too much, but its all forward progress, right?  Here is before.  One empty bed and one bed that has strawberry and lavender plants in it.

Then after:

You may notice the edge of a trailer in the after pic of the strawberry bed...we have to move that.  But its a start!

And the last pic of the day is just a funny.  The lawn and leaf bags are as big as Jack.  See?

Ami bought blueberry bushes today, and we have 2 more on order.  Need to cross pollinate, you know.  I think I am going to go get blackberry and raspberry bushes tomorrow.  We can trellis them right up along the fence.

So the gourds and the sweet peas just don't seem to want to wake up.

But look at everything else!
Lupine and Gazama flowers (this is a slow moving bunch!!)

Jack be little pumpkins, Morning Glories (which I think I have to transplant this weekend!), and Marigolds

Tomatoes (roma and red cherry) and Zucchini

Yellow Squash, Broccoli, Basil and Thai Basil

Oh, and I have been informed that I need to make some credit changes (we would call them POC changes at RHI)...my delightful and very clever friend Anna would like full credit for the name of the blog.  I can't give her full credit since she wasn't part of the conversation, however, upon further review, she is certainly the inspiration for it.  Anna will often say "You know, I don't think you have greeted me properly today", especially to my friend Tom (who helped me arrive at the name).  So Anna, I am greeting you properly right now.  :)

good morning my little sprouty friends!

Summer Squash (top) & Thai Basil (bottom).  Regular basil has also come up right next to its Asian buddy.

These are Jack be Little Pumpkins.

Yesterday my copy of the Backyard Homestead arrived in the mail.  I haven't had a chance to paw through it, but I am dying to.  Its a shame that NASA said yesterday that the earthquake in Chile shortened our days by 1.26 milliseconds.  Like I needed to LOSE time in a day. :)

PS.  Its snowing outside right now.  Its spring snow-very wet and not sticking, but snow nonetheless.  Boooooooooo.

LOOK!
15 hours later.  No lie.

WE HAVE SPROUTS!

Morning Glory and Marigolds

PS. I have a problem

I just ordered more seeds from the Baker Creek Heirloom Seed catalog.  Golden beets, and 4 other herbs.  Apparently I think I am not going to be working this summer and will just be able to tend to my garden.

Ami J found this website that is going to help us plan our garden

http://www.gardeners.com/on/demandware.store/Sites-Gardeners-Site/default/Page-KitchenGardenDesigner

Its pretty cool-you put in measurements of how big your plot is, and then enter the vegetables you want to grow and it grids it off for you, tells you where to plant what and when to plant it.
